Legal Igbo Translator
About the role
Verdacert is a certified translation company serving USCIS filings, US courts, universities, and medical providers, with deep specialization in MENA-region languages and document types. We are expanding our reviewer network to cover additional languages, and are looking for a Legal Igbo Translator to certify translations of civil, legal, and immigration documents from Igbo into English (and vice versa as needed).
As a reviewer, you will work on documents such as birth certificates, marriage records, court filings, and academic transcripts, ensuring each translation meets the accuracy and formatting standards required for official submission, including USCIS certification requirements.
What you'll do
- Review and edit machine-generated first-draft translations between Igbo and English for accuracy, completeness, and fidelity to the source document
- Sign certification statements attesting to the accuracy and completeness of each translation
- Preserve original document layout and formatting in the translated deliverable
- Apply standard transliteration conventions to proper nouns, names, and places consistent with client filing needs (e.g., matching spelling to immigration forms)
- Flag discrepancies, illegible text, or ambiguous content in source documents to the project team
- Meet defined turnaround windows (as fast as same-day) for assigned documents
What we're looking for
- Native or professional fluency in Igbo and English, with strong written skills in both
- Demonstrated experience translating legal, civil, or immigration documents
- Familiarity with the document conventions and civil registry formats common in Igbo-speaking regions
- Comfort working with certification and attestation language for official/legal use
- Strong attention to detail, especially with names, dates, and numerical data
- Ability to work within defined turnaround deadlines, including rush requests
Nice to have
- Prior experience providing certified translations for USCIS, courts, or academic institutions
- Familiarity with other Nigerian languages or regional dialects
- Experience working as a freelance or contract linguist with translation agencies
