Legal Amharic Translator
About the role
Verdacert is a US-based certified translation service specializing in MENA-region and other-language civil documents for immigration, court, university, and medical use, with native-speaker review on every document and a signed certification statement meeting USCIS regulatory requirements (8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3)). We're looking for a Legal Amharic Translator to join our reviewer network, translating and certifying Amharic-language civil and legal documents for clients including immigration attorneys, courts, and government agencies.
What you'll do
- Translate Amharic-language documents into English, including birth certificates, marriage records, court documents, academic transcripts, and other civil records
- Review and edit AI-generated first-draft translations for accuracy, completeness, and faithfulness to the source document
- Apply correct transliteration conventions for Amharic proper nouns, names, and dates in accordance with filing requirements
- Sign certification statements attesting to translation accuracy and completeness, consistent with USCIS and court standards
- Preserve original document layout and formatting in the final certified translation
- Meet turnaround commitments ranging from 8-hour rush to 48-hour standard delivery windows
What we're looking for
- Native or near-native fluency in Amharic and English
- Demonstrated experience translating legal, civil, or immigration-related documents
- Familiarity with Ethiopian civil registry documents, court records, and official document conventions
- Strong attention to detail, especially with names, dates, and numbers that must be transcribed exactly
- Ability to work independently and meet firm deadlines on a rolling or per-document basis
- Comfort reviewing and correcting machine-generated draft translations rather than translating from scratch every time
Nice to have
- Prior experience providing certified translations for USCIS, US courts, or university admissions
- Familiarity with Ethiopian calendar systems and civil-vs-religious document distinctions
- Experience with asylum, humanitarian parole, or immigration case documentation
